Lions Crushed by the Southeastern Fire

The Lions of Florida Memorial University (20-17, 8-11) traveled to Lakeland, FL to take on the nation's number one ranked team, the Fire of Southeastern University (37-45, 13-0).

The Fire jumped out to a 0-2 lead after back to back doubles and 2 walks in the bottom of the first inning. The Lions were able to get a run across home plate when Jose Chavez hit a solo shot over the left field wall in the top of the second inning. Chavez' homerun would make the score 1-2 in favor of the Fire.

In the bottom of the second inning the Lions would suffer a bad inning as they gave up 4 runs. After just two innings of baseball, the Lions were down, 1-6. The Fire would add one run in the bottom of the third inning, two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. After six complete innings of baseball, the Lions were down 1-11. In order for the Lions to stay alive in this game they would have had to keep the Fire from gaining a ten run lead through seven innings. The Lions scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 2-11. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Fire would hit a homerun and end the game by 10-run rule (Mercy Rule).

The Lions were only able to earn 5 hits compared to the Fire's 16. The final score was 2-12 in favor of the Fire. The loss drops the Lions record to 20-12 and 8-11 in The Sun Conference.

The Lions will look to even things up on Saturday afternoon as they take on the Fire in a double-header.
