(WEST PALM BEACH, FLA) -- In their first showing of the 2019 season, the Florida Memorial University women's volleyball team finished 2-0 at the Jersey Mike's Classic, Saturday, August 17.
The Lions competed against Pensacola Christian College and Columbia International University on day two of the tournament hosted by conference opponent Keiser University.
In their first matchup of the day FMU took on PCC in what would be a 3-0 win in favor of the Lions. In the first set, junior
Sammyra Albarran scored the first points of the match after a kill set up by junior
Keisha Santana.
FMU led by as much as five early in the game taking a 7-2 lead over the Eagles. A few services aces from their opponent made it a more competitive game and eventually Pensacola Christian would tie the game 8-8. The rest of the set went point for point. The Lions were able to pull away in the end and freshman
Biancaliz Cruz collected the final kill to win the set 25-20.
The final two sets went smoother for the Lions who finished 25-11, 25-12 respectively. Albarran led the Lions with 13 kills and added two service aces. Senior
Yulianna Charris and Cruz each added seven kills and two aces in the win.
Junior
Francheska Rivera finished with 19 assists and added six digs while Santana added 12 digs and five aces. The Lions outscored the Eagles 32-10 in kills and 29-10 in aces.
The second matchup of the day started as a tough one for the Lions even though Rivera's service ace gave FMU the 1-0 advantage to start the game.
The Lions led the game for majority of the match before the Rams were able to tie it 21-21. Back to back errors from both teams kept the game close and went beyond the usual 25-point game. FMU fell 26-28 to CIU in the first set.
The second set started with a 4-0 lead for Florida Memorial. The Lions led by as many as 10 and ended the game 25-16 before repeating the process in sets three and four winning 25-14 and 25-18.
Sophomore
Dayla Hall finished second on the team with 10 kills and tied for first with senior
Ivana Maric with three blocks. Maric and Albarran each finished with nine kills while Cruz led the team with 12 and added eight aces.
Rivera finished with a season-high 40 assists while Santana collected 15 digs.
The Lions will host a jamboree Sunday, August 18 starting at 9 A.M. to help certify area referees and will return to regular play Tuesday, August 20 when they host Eastern Oregon at 4 P.M. for their home opener.
