Men's Soccer Defeats Ave Maria In Conference Play

(MIAMI GARDENS, FLA) – Florida Memorial University's men's soccer team gained an exciting victory against conference opponent, Ave Maria University, Saturday, September 28. 
 
In their first conference match of the season, the game day jitters were certainly not in the air for the Lions.

To jump start the match, FMU took the first five shots before AMU could get one in. The Lions had 10 shots on goal compared to AMU's four.

Senior Caleb Acosta accounted for six of those shots and one of the teams goals. Despite the amount of shots taken, the Gyrenes were able to score first, making their first goal at the 27th minute.
 
Acosta tied the match at one after scoring a penalty kick less than 10 minutes later.

Senior Jose Romero made gave the Lions a 2-1 lead to close the first half when he scored a goal with 48 seconds left on the clock. 
 
With a little under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, AMU scored their second goal which tied the score at 2-2. The game would eventually head into overtime as both teams went scoreless during the remaining time in regulation.

The Gyrenes had a chance to win the game by receiving a penalty kick, but sophomore goalkeeper Angel Garcia came up with a big save.

A counter attacked which turned into a goal for Romero put the Lions ahead 3-2 in overtime and closed out the match. His goal was assisted by Paolo Caro
 
Florida Memorial will travel to Barry University on Tuesday, October 1 for their next match.
