Lady Lions Hold Off Late Thomas Rally, FMU Wins 74-67

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Florida Memorial University's women played like a team ready to snap a losing streak Thursday, opening up as large as a 25-point lead over host Thomas University, but had to stave off a late rally attempt by the Night Hawks before earning a 74-67 victory in the Thomas University Gymnasium.

Florida Memorial's lead began to dwindle late in the third quarter and into the fourth as Thomas University (2-8, 0-6) turned on a full court press in an attempt to speed up the pace and force the Lions into turnovers. While FMU did turn over the ball a handful of times over the course of the final 15 minutes of the game, it was more just increase in shooting efficiency by the Night Hawks that powered their rally attempt.

Thomas University cut FMU's lead down to 64-59 with 5:30 left in the fourth, but the Lady Lions made just enough offensive plays and free throws to keep the Night Hawks at bay. Thomas cut its deficit down to four – 71-67 – after pair of free throws with 13 seconds left, but Danielle Bailey made one of her two free throws to push the lead back to five, then Airnesha Gamble sealed the game on the next trip down the floor hitting a pair of free throws to create the final 74-67 margin.

The Lady Lions (8-8, 3-3 Sun Conference), who will stay in the Peach State through the weekend to face Sun Conference rival College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday, pulled its record to an even 8-8 with the victory and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Gamble turned in, arguably, her best performance of the season Thursday – scoring a game-high 21 points in a game-high 37 minutes of action. Gamble, who missed time recently, also dished out a pair of assists and recorded a pair of steals to help buoy the Lions. Gamble's 21 along with the 19-point performance from Shawnice King carried the offensive load for Florida Memorial, who played Thursday without senior forward Isis Lane. Lane, the team's season leader in points and rebounds, didn't suit up against Thomas University but FMU head coach Gregory Stanback got contributions from other players.

Aside from Gamble and King, Unique Tate added nine points – coming from three three-pointers – off the bench; Brittney Howard contributed seven points, four rebounds, and three assists; and Anjelie Tirone finished with eight points and six boards.
