BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Florida Memorial University's women just didn't have enough – literally – Saturday as the shorthanded Lady Lions fell 71-63 to host College of Coastal Georgia.
FMU (8-9, 3-4 Sun Conference) played without leading scorer and rebounder
Isis Lane for the second straight game and played Saturday without guard
Shawnice King, who matched her season-high for points in Florida Memorial's road win over Thomas University this past Thursday.
In their absence, the Lady Lions – who will return to Florida this week and play a road conference game at Johnson & Wales University this coming Thursday (Jan. 16) – did get a 15-point, 10-rebound performance from guard
Airneisha Gamble and a game-high 17 points from
Ashleign Gary, but it wasn't enough as Coastal Georgia (9-5, 5-2) built as large as an 11-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and kept Florida Memorial at bay over the final five minutes.
FMU attempt at a fourth-quarter rally saw it pull within three points of the Mariners (66-63) after a pair of free throws by Gamble with 2:33 left in the game. However, Coastal Georgia would score the final five points of the game while holding the Lady Lions scoreless.
Aside from Gamble and Gary, FMU did see seven other players record points Saturday, but none of them scored in double figures.
Brittney Howard led the remaining scorers with seven points in 37 minutes of action,
Anjelie Tirone and
Nashley Zayas each added six, while
Meaurie Pickett and Ixasmar Gonzalez both finished with four as the Lions finished a collective 23-for-63 from the field and 5-of-23 from three-point range.
Contrarily, Coastal Georgia had four players finish with double-digit points – including two players with 16 – and shot 42 percent from the field.
