Lady Lions Hold Off Warner University, Win 74-68 Thursday

LAKE WALES, Fla. – After seeing its early 20-point lead dwindle down to just two in the fourth quarter, Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team held on to capture its first win of the 2020-21 season and continued its winning streak over Warner University Thursday night, defeating the host Royals 74-68 in the Turner Athletic Center.

The Lady Lions (1-1, 1-0 The Sun Conference) had four players finish with double-digit points, led by junior guard Keaynna Tolbert's game-high 19 points. The Prairie View A&M University transfer finished 6-for-21 from the field while also totaling four rebounds and three steals. Destiny Marin, who made her season debut Thursday, had 11 points while Heather Durand and Jamari Tillman each finished with 10.

FMU, which will host neighborhood and TSC rival St. Thomas University Saturday (Nov. 14) for its home opener, built a 40-20 lead with just over three minutes left in the second quarter after a Durand three-pointer. Warner University chipped away at FMU's lead through the second half, closing to within two (61-59) with just under six minutes to play.

The Lions showed poise, hitting timely shots and getting key stops over the final five minutes – rebuilding its lead, as large as 11, before coasting into the 6-point victory.

Thursday's win was not only FMU's first win of the season, it was also the 10th consecutive time that it got the best of Warner University. Florida Memorial has owned the matchup between the programs recently, defeating the Royals by an average of 14 points over the course of the 10-game winning streak and has now won 13 of the past 14 meetings overall.

FMU head coach Gregory Stanback had to be more than satisfied with his team's ability to hold off the Royals rally, never relinquish the lead, and capture the win – but he should be quite pleased with his team's ability to limit turnovers Thursday.

Having committed 41 turnovers in the season-opening game this past Saturday, Stanback's squad played a much cleaner game Thursday, only giving away the ball 11 times – compared to 27 Warner turnovers, 15 of which coming from FMU steals.

10 different Florida Memorial players saw action Thursday and all 10 recorded points while Warner University got majority of its offensive production from just three players – led by Isabella Lopez's 18 points.
