Lions Make Late Push, Can’t Topple Faulkner University

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the second straight night, Florida Memorial University received a season-best performance from one of its upperclassmen – this time in the form of senior Cheikh Kebe's 17 team-high points – but it wasn't enough as the Lions fell 84-71 to host Faulkner University in the second night of the Battle At The Beach tournament in Montgomery, Alabama.

Kebe knocked down 4 of his 5 shots from beyond the three-point line and grabbed 6 rebounds for FMU, which trailed by 10 at halftime and fell behind by as many as 17 midway through the second half.

The Lions, who will play its third consecutive and final game in the Battle At The Beach tourney Saturday afternoon against William Carey University, did make a rally attempt as the second half waned. Trailing 71-54 with just under five minutes to play, Florida Memorial went on an 11-2 run – capped by a Kebe jumper – to cut the deficit to eight with 2:35 left to play.

FMU trimmed Faulkner's lead to eight again at the 1:42 mark after Terence Clayton split a pair of free throws.

Eight would be as nigh as the Lions would draw, however, as the Falcons were able to keep FMU (1-4) at bay and coast into the final 84-71 margin.

Kebe was one of three Florida Memorial players to finish in double figures Saturday. Sam Mack Jr. added 15 points before he fouled out in 20 minutes of action and Quincy Urbina finished with 14 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals.

For the second straight night, the Lions saw their turnover total creep into the 20's. FMU's 20 turnovers led to 26 Faulkner points while the Falcons, surprisingly, also out-dueled the Lions in points in the paint 42-26.
