FMU Drops Tourney Finale To William Carey Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing its third game in as many days, the attrition of the Battle At The Beach Tournament seemingly got the better of Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team Sunday as the Lions fell into an early hole and eventually fell 80-65 to William Carey University in the Tine W. Davis Gymnasium in Montgomery, Alabama.

The Lions, who lost its previous two games in the Battle At The Beach tourney, trailed by just four midway through the first half – but saw the Crusaders steadily pull away, opening as large as a 17-point lead, before holding a 48-32 advantage over FMU by halftime.

That 16-point hole proved too much for Florida Memorial, which will return home and have a few days off before it makes a December 3rd trip to face Southeastern University, to overcome. The Lions got as close as 10 (60-50) with 7:46 left in the second half, but William Carey's lead never got below double digits through the course of the rest of the game.

Florida Memorial was led by senior center Mubashar Ali's 13 points and 8 rebounds. The 7-foot, Helsinki, Finland native was the Lions' most active and efficient offensive performer Sunday – going 5-of-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Ali's performance Sunday was also enough to earn him a spot on the Battle At The Beach All-Tournament team.

No other FMU (1-5) player had point totals in double figures. Sam Mack Jr. and Terence Clayton each had 8 points while Muhammad Gilchrist and Korin Bradley each added 6 points.

William Carey, conversely, had all five of its starters finish with point totals in the double digits – led by pair of players with 18.
