Tirone Sets Career-High For Rebounds, FMU Falls To Life University

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For all that didn't quite go the way Florida Memorial University would've hoped it would've in its season-opening game – chiefly its exorbitant number of turnovers – the Lady Lions got a career-best performance from its lone senior and showed a high level of resilience as it rallied back from a double-digit deficit and even held a three-point lead midway through the fourth quarter before ultimately falling 72-68 to Life University Friday night in Jimmy Faulkner Classic.

Anjelie Tirone helped spark the Lions' second half run as she snatched down a career-best 21 rebounds Friday. 12 of those boards came on the offensive end, giving Florida Memorial multiple second-chance attempts, while she also set team highs in steals (5) and blocks (3).

FMU trailed 50-38 with 4:59 left in the third quarter but would outscore the Running Eagles 21-8 over the course of the next seven minutes, to take a 59-58 lead – its first of the game – after a Heather Durand three-pointer from the corner. Carried by the swing in momentum, Florida Memorial's lead would grow to 64-60 after a Cheyanne Whitfield three.

The Lions, who will open conference play next week when it travels to Warner University on November 12, clung to a 66-63 lead with just over five minutes to play but was hampered by turnovers over the remainder of the game – enabling Life University to finish the game on a 9-2 run.

Florida Memorial committed 41 turnovers Friday night. And it was a mixed bag of miscues – with a handful of forced errors thanks to Life University's pressing defense and a handful of unforced errors, which can be attributed to it being the Lions' first game of the season with a mostly new roster. The Running Eagles committed 40 turnovers themselves, throwing errant passes thanks to FMU head coach Gregory Stanback throwing multiple defensive looks at Life Friday.

Aside from Tirone's big night on the board, FMU did get 20 points from junior guard Keaynna Tolbert. The Prairie View A&M transfer was aggressive in attacking the basket, resulting in her shooting a game-high seven free throws.

Chantel Barnett added 14 points for FMU off the bench and Jamari Tillman finished with 13.
