Lady Lions’ Rally Falls Just Short, Fall To Webber International

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team showed an elite level of perseverance, heart, and grit as it erased a 21-point second-half deficit down to a single point – multiple times – before falling just short of a complete comeback in a 86-83 defeat to Webber International University Saturday in the FMU Wellness Center.

The Lions stared a 62-41 deficit with 7:05 left in the third quarter in the face but didn't flinch as they began cutting into Webber International's lead. FMU chopped it down to just 13 by the end of the third quarter and cut it down to just three (66-63) with 7:09 left in the game – going on a 13-0 run over a four-minute span between the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter.

FMU trailed by a single point at three different junctures of the fourth quarter and even had a chance to tie the game with 2:34 remaining but junior guard Keaynna Tolbert missed the and-one free throw after she made a tough layup through contact – leaving the score 79-78.

Missed free throws down the stretch was the thorn in the Lions' paw during their rally attempt. Through the fourth quarter alone, FMU missed 10 of 21 free throws. Florida Memorial ended up shooting 22-for-38 overall from the free throw line Saturday.

Florida Memorial (3-3, 3-2 The Sun Conference) cut Webber's lead to 85-83 with four seconds left in the game after Jamari Tillman sank a pair of free throws, but the Lions were forced to foul and send the Warriors to the free throw line on the other end – where they made one of two and sealed the final 86-83 margin.

Tolbert extended her streak of games scoring at least 18 points to six consecutive, as she finished with a game-high 24 points. Tillman also continued her streak of games scoring 10 or more, as she finished with 14 points.

Heather Durand stepped up and gave FMU 13 points – including 9 in the fourth quarter – while Cheyanne Whitfield turned in a season-high 11 points and 8 rebounds off the bench for the Lions.

FMU, which will have a week off before it travels to face Southeastern University on December 12, clawed its way back in the game because it returned to the style of basketball that head coach Gregory Stanback had his team playing earlier this season – fast-paced, creating turnovers to create scoring opportunities.

Webber International (6-1, 3-1) saw its offense dry up as the Lions turned up its defensive pressure – at one point forcing the Warriors into turnovers on four straight possessions in the third quarter. Webber turned the ball over 26 times which led to 21 FMU points – almost negating the 56-37 rebound advantage that the Warriors held over FMU.
