MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's beach volleyball team will be put through an early-season wringer this weekend as it will play four games in two days in the Florida International University Beach Volleyball Tournament, beginning with a match against Missouri State University Friday morning.
The Lady Lions are slated to take on the Bulldogs at 9 a.m. Friday then take on San Diego City College later Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Florida Memorial (1-1) playing in its first official beach volleyball season, earned its first win this past weekend when it knocked off Sun Conference foe Ave Maria University 3-2.
Under the direction of head coach
Marrita Crockett-Moulton and using a roster comprised of mostly the same players that were a part of FMU's 2019 indoor volleyball Sun Conference championship team, the Lions have already shown that their talents can translate from the hardwood to the sand.
After the two games on Friday, FMU will return to FIU's south campus to play two more games on Saturday. Florida Memorial's Saturday will begin with a 10:30 a.m. tilt with the University of New Orleans and end the leap day with a 3 p.m. showdown with Sun Conference rival Webber International University.
Aside from it being the Lions' first beach volleyball tournament appearance this season, it will be a homecoming – and family reunion – for Crockett-Moulton.
Crockett-Moulton served as an assistant coach for FIU's indoor and beach teams prior to her coming to lead Florida Memorial's programs. Better yet, Crockett-Moulton's mom, Rita Crockett, is FIU's head volleyball coach.
While the two teams won't face each other over the weekend, the FMU coach will once again get to share the – beach – court with her mom, who is the first African-American woman to win a World Beach Volleyball Championship and is regarded as one of the best all-round volleyball players ever.
