FMU Has Tough Day, Drops Two At FIU Beach Bash Tourney

MIAMI, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's beach volleyball team had a tough Leap Day, pushing its opponents throughout but ultimately dropping both of its matches Saturday during the second day of the Florida International University "Beach Bash" beach volleyball tournament.

FMU lost to University of New Orleans 5-0 in the first match and fell 4-1 to Sun Conference foe Webber International University in its second match of the day.

The Lions (1-5) also lost both of its matches Friday – falling to Missouri State and San Diego City College.

Florida Memorial stood toe-to-toe with both New Orleans and Webber International Saturday. FMU scored at least 12 points in each set in all but one of the 10 total sets played against UNO, including a competitive No. 4 pair match that saw Alanis Santana and Francheska Rivera only get edged 21-17, 21-16.

Against Webber International, the duo of Azmabeth Infante and Keisha Santana Roldan picked up a three-set victory, winning the tiebreaker 15-10 over the Warriors duo. The Lady Lions' overall tilt with the Warriors could've easily gone the other way, though.Jessenia Bonilla and Rachele Mancinelli nearly toppled Webber's No. 1 pair in a spirited three-set match and Jazmin Molina and Biancaliz Cruz, an all-Sun Conference First Team selection during the indoor season, had a back and forth match in the No. 3 flight before being falling in third set.

Saturday became a bit of a marathon day for the Lady Lions as the tournament experienced multiple delays due to many of the preceding duels going the full three games in each flight. Instead of FMU's first match beginning at its scheduled time of 10:30 a.m., it didn't start until nearly 2 p.m.

The Lions will have a few days to rest and regroup before it travels to Babson Park, Florida on March 7 for a dual-match day – taking on host Webber International followed by a match with Warner University.
