MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's beach volleyball team will hit the road this weekend, going to Babson Park, Florida, where it will play two matches against Sun Conference opponents Saturday – taking on host Webber International University at 1 p.m. and Warner University at 3 p.m.
Both matches will take place on Webber International's campus beach volleyball courts.
FMU, playing its first official beach volleyball regular season, has shown already that it can stand toe-to-toe with other programs around the state – and the country. Participating in the Florida International University "Beach Bash" Tournament this past weekend, the Lady Lions pushed back against all four of the opponents they faced in the two days – including a hotly contested match against San Diego City College.
Florida Memorial volleyball head coach
Marrita Crockett-Moulton, who led the Lions to an indoor volleyball Sun Conference championship this past November, has seen her team – which is comprised almost entirely of players from the indoor team – has seen her squad make increscent gains since practice began and through the first six games.
Saturday will be the second time that the Lions will faceoff with Webber International (4-3) this season. The Warriors did knockoff FMU 4-1 during a match in the second day of the FIU Beach Bash tourney, but it was a match that could've easily gone in the Lady Lions' favor. Aside from the three-set win that No. 4 pair
Azmabeth Infante and
Keisha Santana Roldan picked up, Florida Memorial's No. 1 pair of Jessenia Bonilla and
Rachele Mancinelli and its No. 3 pair of
Jazmin Molina and
Biancaliz Cruz were both edged out in their respective flight matches in three sets.
Before the Lions can avenge their tournament loss to the Warriors, they'll first have to go up against another Sun Conference foe in Warner University. The Wildcats (0-2), who will take on St. Thomas University at 11 a.m. prior to taking on FMU, has played a total of five matches this season but only two – two separate losses to NCAA Division-II school Saint Leo University – have counted.
