BABSON PARK, Fla. – After falling into a two-set hole, Florida Memorial showed a bit of its resolve and grit but couldn't get its rally completely over the hump as it fell 3-1 (22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 18-25) to host Webber International University Saturday night in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
While the Lions (2-2, 2-2 Sun Conference) finished with fewer overall errors compared to the Warriors, many of FMU's errors came at some of the most inauspicious moments – including eight overall errors during the fourth and decisive set.
Saturday's second set seemed to be the true turning point, however.
Florida Memorial led by as many as four (14-10), but saw the Warriors claw their way back in – once again aided by errors – and play to a 17-17 draw. The Lions took a 20-17 lead after a pair of attacks by
Agustina Busque and clung to a 23-21 lead after a
Biancaliz Cruz kill. Webber International, which has now won four straight matches, would end up outscoring the Lions 5-1 the rest of the way to take the second set and a 2-0 lead.
The Lions looked more like themselves in the third set – turning an early 6-1 deficit into a 16-12 lead in route to a 25-16 victory.
Cruz ended up leading Florida Memorial in kills Saturday with 11.
Adriana Soto and
Andressa Souza, who made her season debut for FMU Saturday, each finished with nine kills. With Souza back in the lineup, the Lions had 10 players available – the most it has had available in any match up to this point in the season.
Busque led the team with 14 assists, senior
Francheska Rivera had 11 assists, and senior Keisha Santana Roldan tied for the game-high with 24 digs.
It'll be a bit of quick turnaround for FMU as it will host Sun Conference foe Warner University this coming Wednesday (Sept. 23).
