Lady Lions Hamstrung By Turnovers, Fall To Keiser Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Some nights just aren't your night.

Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team couldn't seem to find the same mojo it had working for it the past three games and just couldn't get on track Thursday night as it fell 69-52 to visiting Keiser University.

The biggest stumbling block for the Lady Lions (6-5, 6-4 The Sun Conference) was its turnovers. Florida Memorial, which will travel to face conference and neighborhood rival St. Thomas University this coming Tuesday (Jan. 19), turned the ball over 24 times Thursday – its second-highest turnover total this season.

Those turnovers led to 25 total points for Keiser University and made the Lions' one-point halftime deficit grow to seven by the end of the third quarter and balloon to as large as 19 before Heather Durand knocked down a jumper in the waning seconds to create the final 69-52 deficit.

FMU was led in scoring and rebounds by freshman guard Chantel Barnett. Barnett totaled 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Durand added 12 points and 7 boards while playing a game-high 35 minutes. The Lions' usual leading scorer – and the Sun Conference's leading scorer – Keaynna Tolbert struggled to find scoring opportunities Thursday; she finished with just 9 points – well below her 22 points-per-game average – shooting just 2-of-13 from the field.

Senior Anjelie Tirone finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds for the Lions, but head coach Gregory Stanback's squad missed the contributions tangible and intangible contributions of junior spark plug guard Jamari Tillman, who finished with just 4 points.

Even after Thursday's result, the Lady Lions remain the No. 3 team in the Sun Conference standings and can gain ground on two-seed St. Thomas with a victory next week.
