Ali Records Double-Double, But FMU Falls At Keiser Thursday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team had four players score in double figures, led by a 19-point, 10-rebound performance from senior center Mubashar Ali, but it wasn't enough to overcome the hot shooting of host Keiser University as the Lions fell 77-66 Thursday night in the KU Student Life Center.

Similar to the first two matchups between the programs this season, Thursday's game was a nip-and-tuck battle for much of the game. FMU clung to a 1-point lead at halftime but Keiser quickly erased that and opened up an 11-point lead not even eight minutes into the second half. Florida Memorial, which will host Ave Maria University this coming Saturday (Jan. 23), clawed its way back into the game – going on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 53 after a pair of Cheikh Kebe free throws with 8:08 left to play.

The teams essentially stayed connected by bucket a or two over the course of the next four minutes – including the Lions taking a 61-59 lead at the 4:41 mark. Keiser retook the lead 63-61 with 3:13 remaining and would never relinquish it, extending its lead with a pair of three-pointers and icing the game with eight consecutive made free throws as the Lions intentionally fouled in the final seconds of the game – cementing the 77-66 final.

Ali's 19 was the game's highest point total as was his 10 boards. Kebe had 12 points and 6 rebounds for FMU (5-9, 5-6 The Sun Conference); Muhammad Gilchrist chipped in with 7 points while the hero from FMU's Tuesday game, Aubrey Washington, went scoreless.

Terence Clayton added 11 points as did Sam Mack Jr., but Mack was just 4-of-15 from the field and had his streak of 20-point games snapped at three.

The Lions didn't have a great shooting night overall. FMU shot 38 percent from the field but was just 5-of-23 (22 percent) from three-point range. Keiser shot just under 48 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc. Florida Memorial head coach Ansar Al-Ameen's team did win the rebound battle (36-32) and was only minus-3 in the turnover margin (16-13), the difference Thursday was the Seahawks' ability to make shots at a higher clip.

The Seahawks (11-7, 7-5) also had four players finish with double-digit point totals Thursday, led by CoreVon Lott's 18 points.
