FMU Men Get Edged Out By Keiser University Monday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team showed resolve in rallying all the way back from a halftime deficit but couldn't stave off host Keiser University in the waning minutes as the Lions fell 69-65 Monday night in the KU Student Life Center.

Playing a makeup game from a postponed meeting originally scheduled for November 21st, Florida Memorial chopped away at a 7-point halftime deficit – that grew as large as 10 midway through the second half – and eventually took a 65-62 lead with 2:31 left in the game following a Terence Clayton three-pointer.

That three-point lead for the Lions would evaporate over the next minute, as Keiser University went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead and ultimately outscored FMU 10-3 over the final two-and-a-half minutes to create the final 69-65 margin.

Clayton's big shot late was a part of his 16-point night – setting a new season-high point total for the junior guard. It was Muhammad Gilchrist, however, that led the Lions in scoring Monday night. Gilchrist turned a season-best 20 points – off the bench – shooting an efficient 6-of-8 overall from the field, 5-of-7 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

7-foot senior center Mubashar Ali secured his fourth double-double of the season – finishing with 10 points and a game-high 10 boards.

Florida Memorial (3-6, 3-3 The Sun Conference), which will host Thomas University this coming Thursday, some good things Monday night that typically lead to winning. The Lions won the rebound battle (43-35) and shot better than its opponent from the field and from three-point range. Florida Memorial also held Keiser's leading scorer, CoreVon Lott, to just 13 points – well below his nearly 19 point-per-game average.

FMU's bugaboo was its 21 turnovers – compared to just 10 for the Seahawks – and they shot just six free throws as a team while Keiser University (7-4, 4-2) went to the charity stripe 17 times – knocking down 10. It also didn't help that the Lions didn't get much production from Sam Mack or Aubrey Washington Monday. While taking nothing away from Gilchrist and Clayton's performances, head coach Ansar Al-Ameen surely would've liked to gotten more from his upperclassmen guards, who finished with 12 points combined on 5-for-19 shooting.

The Lions remain on solid ground within the Sun Conference standings even with the unfavorable outcome Monday. While Florida Memorial currently sits tied for the No. 5 spot, it is still just two games behind the conference's current first-place team, with a four-game home stand on the horizon.
