Marin’s Hot Shooting Lifts Lions To Win Over Thomas University

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Just about every time the ball touched Florida Memorial University's guard Destin Marin's hands, it was going up and it was going in.

The junior guard set a new personal season-high for three-pointers made in a single game Thursday night – knocking down five shots from long range as she totaled a game-high (and personal season-best) 21 points to propel Florida Memorial to an 82-70 victory over visiting Thomas University.

Even with Marin's hot shooting, Florida Memorial (5-4, 5-3 The Sun Conference) had to earn its 12-point win Thursday. Thomas University played beyond what its winless record would say and fought like a team hungry for its first win of the season.

The Lady Lions, who will host College of Coastal Georgia this coming Saturday (Jan. 9), held just a four-point lead at halftime and clung to those same four points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Florida Memorial did pull away from the upset-minded Night Hawks (0-6, 0-6) over the course of the final six minutes of the game – going on a 12-2 run to stave off Thomas and ultimately capture the 82-70 win.

Marin was as much efficient as she was effective, finishing 5-of-6 from three-point range and 8-for-12 overall from the field, but she wasn't alone in giving the Lions an offensive boost.

Chantel Barnett was the team's second-leading scorer Thursday with 17 points while also grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists, and nabbing 4 steals. Freshman center Giselle Garcia turned in her best performance of the season, notching a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Marin's, Barnett's, and Garcia's performances filled in the gap for head coach Gregory Stanback as he saw his usual leading scorers hindered Thursday.

Lions junior and leading scorer Keaynna Tolbert was saddled with early foul trouble – picking up her third foul in the first quarter, forcing Stanback to sit her for the entire second quarter – while typical No. 2 scorer Jamari Tillman took a hard tumble early in the game and seemed to be moving a bit gingerly while also having a tough shooting night.

Still, Tolbert scored 14 points in the second half to finish with 16 for the game and Tillman knocked down six free throws to help push her final point total to 11 – marking the seventh game she's scored 10 more points this season.
