Tolbert Sets New Season High, Lions Dominate Coastal Georgia

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University junior guard Keaynna Tolbert, the leading scorer for both the Lions and the Sun Conference, was saddled by foul trouble in her team's win this past Thursday and finished below her season average for points.

So, in what has become the memed words of Michael Jordan from The Last Dance documentary, "and I took that personally", Tolbert responded with a season-best 35-point performance as the Lady Lions dismantled visiting College of Coastal Georgia and earned a 77-59 victory Saturday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center.

The Orlando, Florida native made 14 of her 25 shot attempts, including knocking down 4-of-9 three-pointers – which also set a new season-high for three-pointers made and attempted in a single game this season – as the Lions turned a 17-point halftime lead into as large as a 30-point advantage midway through the third quarter.

Florida Memorial (6-4, 6-3 The Sun Conference), which has now won three straight games and will have a bit of a respite before hosting conference rival Keiser University on Jan. 14, was able to cruise through much of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter before arriving at its 77-59 victory.

While Tolbert had the hottest hand on the offensive end Saturday, the Lions also got 16 points from freshman Chantel Barnett. Barnett, who is emerging as a consistent option for FMU head coach Gregory Stanback and could garner superlative recognition from the conference if she maintains her recent level of play, also grabbed 8 rebounds, had 3 assists, a block and a steal.

Junior forward Heather Durand finished with the game-high rebound total, snatching down 12 boards, while senior center Anjelie Tirone pulled down 11 rebounds as Florida Memorial totaled 54 rebounds on the day – its second-highest rebounding total this season.

Also, Jamari Tillman had 6 of FMU's 15 steals Saturday, in addition to her 9 points.

Coastal Georgia (5-5, 3-4) did jump out to a 4-0 lead on the Lions, but that would essentially be the extent of their success Saturday. Florida Memorial quickly turned things around, with Tolbert driving to the basket and Barnett hitting shots from long range as they combined for 26 point in the first half.

Defensively, the Lions turned on a full court press – speeding up the tempo of the game and disrupting the Mariners offense and forcing them into 20 turnovers. Florida Memorial also put the proverbial clamps on Coastal Georgia's typical leading scorer Kaliyah Little. The 16 points she ended up with Saturday came on less than 35 percent shooting while also forcing her into team-high 5 turnovers.
