FMU Bounces Back, Dominates Keiser Wednesday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Led by Taira Cottingham's 10 kills and Keisha Santana Roldan's 12 digs, Florida Memorial University bounced back from its brief two-game snide in dominant fashion with a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-12) sweep of host Keiser University Wednesday night at KU's Student Life Center.

The Lions (7-5, 6-2 The Sun Conference) "cleaned up their act" Wednesday. After the two games (against St. Thomas University and Ave Maria University) that saw FMU hamstrung by attacking and service errors, Florida Memorial posted a .252 attacking percentage – including a season-best .560 mark in the third set – while committing just 16 attacking errors.

Cottingham, a graduate senior transfer from NCAA Division-I Alabama State, showcased the power and athleticism that made her a First Team All-SWAC performer in 2019 as she found her rhythm and became another potent hitter near the net.

Sisters and middle blockers Daphinie and Kimberlie Correa also combined for 15 kills for Florida Memorial, which will travel to face College of Coastal Georgia this coming Saturday (Oct. 16), helping pick up the proverbial slack as usual offensive stalwarts Biancaliz Cruz and Sammyra Albarran had more modest games Wednesday – finishing with 7 and 6 kills respectively. Cruz also finished with 10 digs.

Junior setter Agustina Busque continued her consistent play as the team's primary distributor – totaling a game-high 20 assists Wednesday while also racking up 6 digs. Azmabeth Infante and Kimberlie Correa tied for the game-high blocks total with 5 each while Alanis Santana contributed 12 assists and 2 digs.

Wednesday's first set begin as a nip and tuck battle that saw FMU clinging to an 8-7 lead early. The Lions went on an 8-2 run – powered by Cottingham and Albarran – to take a 16-9 lead and put the Seahawks on their heels. That lead, which grew as large as eight, provided enough of a cushion for Florida Memorial to cruise into a 25-17 win.

The second set followed a similar tenor – a close battle early followed by a sizeable run that gave the Lions a lead. However, after FMU took a 16-10 lead, Keiser University (14-18, 4-4) showed signs of life – cutting the Lions' lead down to three (16-13) and ultimately tying the game at 24. Florida Memorial was able to close the door on the Seahawks' rally attempt by scoring the final two points of the set on a Daphinie Correa block followed by a kill by the 6-foot-1 senior.

Keiser made one last push early in the third set, staying within a couple of points of the Lions early. But FMU turned its 10-8 lead into a 16-8 lead and went on to outscore the Seahawks 15-4 through the rest of the set to complete the sweep.
