FMU Cruises Past Coastal Georgia With 3-0 Sweep Saturday

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Sisters Daphinie and Kimberlie Correa combined for 12 blocks, Kimberlie added 9 kills, and Florida Memorial University flexed its muscle in its 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 26-24) sweep of host College of Coastal Georgia Saturday afternoon in CCGA's Coffin Gymnasium.

The Brazilian sisters put together – arguably – their strongest combined performance of the season. Daphinie totaled 5 kills in addition to her sister's 9 and the 6-foot-2 sisters browbeat the Mariners at the net.

With the Correa's – along with a handful of blocking assists from Azmabeth Infante – patrolling the net, Florida Memorial – which will host Warner University this coming Wednesday – also got a game-high 21 digs from senior Keisha Santana Roldan.

Saturday's first two sets followed a similar blueprint – seeing the team stay close to each other through the early part of the set before the Lions (8-5, 7-2 The Sun Conference) swung momentum in its favor with a run of points.

Set one saw FMU clinging to a 5-4 lead before an overturned call by the officials gave the Lions a 6-4 lead opposed to the game being tied at 5. Florida Memorial turned that two-point lead into a seven-point lead (13-6) and used that cushion to cruise into a 25-20 win.

The teams opened the second set see-sawing back and forth, playing to a 10-10 tie. Coastal Georgia (20-3, 5-3) showed signs of life, rattling off five straight points to take the lead and force Lions head coach Marrita Crockett-Moulton to call a timeout. Whatever the third-year coach said to her team in that huddle worked copiously; Florida Memorial responded with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 17 then closed out the game by outscoring CCGA 8-3 to take a 2-0 lead.

Florida Memorial had to work a bit harder to finish off the sweep. The Lions saw a 17-13 lead turn into a 21-20 deficit before the teams played to a 24-24 tie. Biancaliz Cruz cemented FMU's victory by recording the final two points of the match on back-to-back kills.

Cruz led the Lions with 10 kills, Taira Cottingham and Sammyra Albarran finished with 7 and 6 kills respectively, and Agustina Busque totaled 18 assists Saturday.
