FMU Wipes Out Warner, Cruises To 3-0 Sweep Wednesday

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University earned its third straight win and stayed in its tie for the top spot in the Sun Conference standings cruising to a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) over visiting Warner University Wednesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

The Lions (9-5, 8-2 The Sun Conference) also picked up the regular season sweep of Warner while keeping pace with rival St. Thomas University, who defeated Keiser University Wednesday, for the top record in the conference.

Florida Memorial, which will travel to Southeastern University this weekend, came out strong and set the tone for the match against a Royals team (4-17, 0-10) that has yet to earn a conference win this season and entered Wednesday's match having lost six straight.

FMU opened the first set by scoring the first nine points and eventually took a 14-3 lead. Graduate senior Sammyra Albarran's put her power on display as she pelted the Royals back row with hard attack that either found the ground or were too much for Warner to handle as she recorded the first four kills of the night. The Lions took as large as a 13-point lead before cruising into the final 25-14 win thanks to a Taira Cottingham kill.

Albarran ended up with 8 kills Wednesday while Biancaliz Cruz and Daphinie Correa tied for the game-high with 11 kills each. Junior setter Agustina Busque had another solid outing, recording a game-high 20 assists while senior libero Keisha Santana Roldan – who earned Sun Conference Defender of the Week this past week – finished with a game and season-high 31 digs.

Wednesday's second and third sets followed the similar tenors - Warner University showing a bit of moxie early to go back and forth with the Lions before Florida Memorial capitalized on Royals errors to go on a run and take control.

The teams played to a 12-12 tie through the middle of the second set before Florida Memorial went on an 8-1 run points to take a 20-13 lead and cruise into a 25-16 win. The third set saw the teams see-saw back and forth early and even saw Warner University take a 10-9 lead over FMU. The Lions made their run – taking a 13-10 lead that became a 20-14 advantage before the Royals went on a run of their own to tie the game at 22 and again at 23.

While most coaches would've called a timeout to curb the opponents' run, Florida Memorial head coach Marrita Crockett-Moulton elected not to use one and saw her team pick up the final two points of the match – a Warner service error and a Cruz kill – to secure the 25-23 win and the sweep.
