Del Gaudio Scores Hat Trick, FMU Holds Off SCAD Wednesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Junior Michael Del Gaudio recorded a hat trick (three goals) and Florida Memorial University kept its postseason hopes alive as it staved off a late rally attempt from visiting Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to come away with a 4-3 victory Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Lester Brown Park.

Del Gaudio's three goals were the most scored by a Lions' player in a single game this season and it powered FMU to its highest single-game goal total this season.

Wednesday's win also kept FMU in the hunt for a potential berth in the Sun Conference's postseason tournament. The Lions sat in the No. 8 spot heading into the meeting with SCAD, who was in the seventh spot, and was not only able to leapfrog the Bees with the victory but settled into the sixth spot – a half-game ahead of Ave Maria University. With two conference games remaining in the regular season, at Thomas University and at home against Warner University, Florida Memorial would need to win out to guarantee it at least stays in the No. 6 spot as the top six teams in the standings receive berths to the TSC tournament.

Florida Memorial (2-6-1, 2-3-1 The Sun Conference) took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to Del Gaudio's first two goals – a 1-on-none goal in the box after a high ball climbed over the SCAD goalkeeper's head in the 10th minute and a header off a free kick in the 39th minute – and took a 3-0 advantage midway through the second half on his third goal.

Sitting on the comfortable cushion of a three-goal lead in the second half, the Lions got a bit lackadaisical and opened the door for the Bees to make an attempt at a really.

The Bees got on the board in the 66th minute but FMU quickly responded with a 68th minute goal on a header by Xaver Ehrlich – on a Johan Godoy assist, his second of the game – to push its lead to 4-1.

SCAD (3-5-5, 1-3-2) put pressure on the Lions scoring back-to-back goals in the 80th minute – both aided by penalty kicks as the officials began to call the game tighter as the teams began to jostle and jockey more aggressively as the time waned.

Clinging to the 4-3 advantage, FMU was able to preserve its win with solid defensive play in front of goalkeeper Jesus Tovar – who finished with 6 saves Wednesday.

For all that went right for Florida Memorial Wednesday, it did see one thing go wrong. Freshman center back Maximilian Dreger left the game late in the second half after a hard collision with the SCAD goalkeeper. It appeared Dreger sustained an upper extremity injury; after being tended to by trainers he left the field on his feet with help from teammates but later left the field in an ambulance to receive further medical attention.

Up next for the Lions will be a road trip to the Peach State, where they will take on Thomas University on October 23rd.
