FMU WBB Looks Strong Early, Falters Late, Drops Season-Opener

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Florida Memorial University's 14-point halftime lead evaporated in the second half as one bad quarter was its undoing in a 63-56 loss to Stillman College Saturday evening in the opening game of the Dream Classic Academy Invitational at Talladega College.

The Lions, who will return to the hardwood of TC's Hawkins Student Activity Center Sunday afternoon to play Rust College (Miss.) in the second game of its two-game, two-day slate in the Cotton State, scored just three points in the third quarter.

FMU shot just 1-for-17 from the floor (1-for-11 from three-point range) – with the that one made basket being a three-pointer by Natalia Leguizamon 30 seconds into the quarter – as the Lions failed to score the rest of the quarter while committing nine turnovers. Stillman was able to cut Florida Memorial's lead to just two by the start of the fourth quarter.

FMU's offense got back on track in the fourth quarter – producing 22 points – but its defense was still a bit off as the Tigers' momentum swelled and they scored 31 points in the final 10 minutes to hand the Lions the seven-point season-opening loss.

Destiny Marin led Florida Memorial with 19 points Saturday. The returning senior guard knocked down 4-of-9 from three-point range while shooting 7-fot-16 from the field. Sophomore guard Chantel Barnett was the only other FMU player to register double-digit points with 12. The team's 27 turnovers – and the 22 points Stillman scored off those turnovers, stymied the team's offensive rhythm.

The Lions' last lead of the night was a 40-39 advantage with just over seven minutes left in the fourth before Stillman went on an 8-0 run to take the lead that it wouldn't relinquish the rest of night.

Leguizamon finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and a block for FMU while Monique Esbrand had 4 points, 2 steals, and tied for team-high 6 rebounds.
