Lions WSOC Fall To Ave Maria In TSC Finale

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Already shorthanded, Florida Memorial University loss two more players during its match against host Ave Maria University and ultimately fell 7-0 to the Gyrenes Saturday afternoon in what was the final conference game of the season for the Lions.

The injury bug chomped down on FMU again – losing starting goalkeeper Hailey Ilijin and center back Zoie Young Saturday – leaving head coach Anna Maliszewska to play a substantial portion of the match with their No. 3 goalie in net and essentially no reserves on the bench.

Battling against injury attrition was tough enough for the Lions (1-14, 0-10 The Sun Conference), trying to upend Ave Maria while doing so was a herculean ask.

The Gyrenes (10-7, 4-5) jumped out ahead of FMU early, taking a 3-0 lead by the 25th minute of the first half. That three-point lead held through the first half until AMU tacked on four more goals in the second half to create the final 7-0 deficit.

Florida Memorial did attempt four shots – two on goal – Saturday. Donna Perez led the team with 2 shots and attempted both shots on goal.

Keeping Saturday's result in proper perspective given the adverse odds, it does sting that the loss to Ave Maria does mark the fifth-straight season that Florida Memorial will go winless against Sun Conference opponents. FMU last earned a victory against a TSC opponent in 2016, when it defeated the Gyrenes 2-0.

Up next for the Lions will be a local road trip, when the team travels across town to Miami Shores, Florida to take on NCAA Division-II opponent Barry University (Fla.) on November 4th in what is scheduled to be the season finale for Florida Memorial.
