FMU WSOC Falls At Barry University Thursday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Down to a make-shift lineup because of injuries, Florida Memorial University's women's soccer program ended its season with a tough 7-0 loss at NCAA Division-II opponent Barry University (Fla.) Thursday night.

The Lions (1-15) trailed just 1-0 at the half but saw Barry pull away early in the second half – scoring its first goal of the second half not even fully through the 46th minute – and ultimately dealt FMU the lopsided loss.

Already down four players due to injury, Florida Memorial had to replace two more starters in its lineup for Thursday's game – including starting goalkeeper Hailey Ilijin, who missed the game with an upper extremity injury she sustained during the Lions' game at Ave Maria University this past weekend.

Playing in Ilijin's stead was defender and third-reserve goalie Sarah Lugo. Lugo ended up finishing with a personal career-high 9 saves in facing 37 shots from the Buccaneers and was instrumental in holding Barry to just one first-half goal.

The Lions played with just three players available as substitutions Thursday and ended up totaling just three shots as a team – two coming from Natalie Puntonet and one from Kelsey Akins.

As FMU walks into the offseason, it goes in thinking about "what could've been" had the team had a more positive season in terms of health. While injuries are a part of every season in every sport, the Lions never really had the chance to play with the lineup that first-year head coach Anna Maliszewska envisioned or build much on-field chemistry for a roster full of new and young players.

Optimistically, the team's roster only featured two seniors – Brenda Angon and Mariana Rincon – and could return majority of its starting lineup and most of its key reserves heading into 2022.
