Unforced Errors Thorn In Lions’ Paw, FMU Falls To St. Thomas Wednesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – As odd as it may sound to some, it's possible that a team can be too "hyped" for a game. Emotion is always a part of a winning elixir but when it bubbles over, it can lead to mental and physical errors.

Playing against its neighborhood and conference rival in a matchup of the conference's current top two teams, Florida Memorial University sustained 34 unforced errors and looked disjointed because of it as the Lions were swept 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 20-25) by St. Thomas University Wednesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

The Lions had 23 attack errors and 11 service errors – both season-highs – as Wednesday's loss snapped FMU's four-game home winning streak, its five-game conference winning streak, and its six-game overall winning streak.

Wednesday also broke FMU's positive streak in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" – the matchup between the programs that are separated by less than a mile – as the Lions had won the previous two volleyball meetings.

Graduate senior Sammyra Albarran led FMU with 14 kills Wednesday. Biancaliz Cruz had 13 kills and 12 digs, Keisha Santana Roldan also finished with 12 digs, while Agustina Busque and Alanis Santana totaled 20 and 18 assists respectively. The albatross was the season-low .168 attacking percentage the Lions posted Wednesday.

Florida Memorial (6-4, 5-1 The Sun Conference), which will travel to face Ave Maria University this coming Saturday, fell behind early in the first set as St. Thomas University scored five unanswered points open the game. Once the Lions got on the board, they played from behind for the entire set until they chipped away at the deficit – which grew as large as seven – and eventually tied the game at 24.

St. Thomas (11-5, 5-1) took the advantage on a Tyran Chenault kill then Florida Memorial gifted the Bobcats the game on an attack error to fall 26-24.

The second and third sets were even more plebeian than the first for the Lions.

Florida Memorial saw a two-point deficit (20-18) turn into a 25-19 loss in the second set after two errors helped propel St. Thomas. The Lions clung to a two-point lead 18-16 in the third set, saw STU rattle off seven straight points (six coming off Lions errors) to take the lead, and ultimately yielded the match 25-20.
