FMU Struggles At Ave Maria Saturday, Drops Second Straight Match

AVE MARIA, Fla. – After having its home, conference, and overall winning streaks snapped this past Wednesday, Florida Memorial University hoped it would be able to right the ship this weekend against Ave Maria University; instead, the Lions saw its ship sink a bit more – falling to the host Gyrenes 3-0 (11-25, 20-25, 19-25) Saturday afternoon.
 
FMU was outpaced in every major counting statistic Saturday and recorded its second-lowest outputs for points (40) and attacking percentage (.090) in a single match this season against Ave Maria.
 
The Lions (6-5, 5-2 The Sun Conference) had it rough right from the start. FMU fell into a 6-0 hole to open the first set and saw that deficit grow to 14-7 before it ballooned up to 21-7 and ended up in a 25-11 loss – Florida Memorial's lowest total of points in a single set this season and its largest margin of defeat in a single set this season.
 
FMU, which will play a pair of road games this coming week beginning with a October 13th trip to Keiser University, made the second and third sets a bit more competitive. However, Florida Memorial never held a lead at any point of Saturday's match – evidence that the team's competitive fire was barely at the level of a small ember.
 
No Lions player had double-digit kills Saturday. Middle blocker Kimberlie Correa led the team with 8 kills while Adriana Soto and Biancaliz Cruz each had 6 kills. Alanis Santana and Agustina Busque finished with 14 and 13 assists respectively while veteran libero Keisha Santana Roldan had just 2 digs,
