Lions Show Resilience, Fall To Webber International Saturday

HIALEAH, Fla. – Playing with a shorthanded roster and taking on one of the better teams in the conference, Florida Memorial University showed a sizable amount of pride and resilience in the face of adversity, battling visiting Webber International University to the bitter end of a 4-0 match Saturday at Goodlet Park.

The Lions, who were playing their second straight home match at the natural grass park in Hialeah, Florida because their home field – Dr. Lester Brown Park in Miami Gardens, Florida – was unavailable, played an aggressive brand of soccer Saturday despite what the final margin read.

FMU (0-9, 0-5 The Sun Conference) head coach Anna Maliszewska's team was still missing multiple players with lower extremity injuries, including speedy forward Amealia Smith. Still, Florida Memorial had three different players register shots Saturday. Mya Andrade, Natalie Puntonet, and Emerita Garcia all had shots with Garcia being credited with a shot on goal.

Florida Memorial did hold the Warriors (9-0-1, 3-0) to just one goal through the first 45 minutes of the game. It wasn't until the final 27 minutes that Webber International tacked on the final three goals.

Following the weekend, the Lions will have a few days to mend and hopefully see the healthy return of some players before they travel to the Peach State to face Thomas University on Thursday (October 14).
