King & Benton Power Lions MBB To Overtime Win Over Keiser Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Corey Benton and Anfernee King made big plays in the biggest moments and helped lift Florida Memorial University to a 76-70 overtime win over visiting Keiser University Saturday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

Saturday's win, which completed a sweep of the Seahawks after the FMU women's basketball team also knocked off KU earlier Saturday, snapped an eight-game losing streak the Lions men had against Keiser – spanning back to the 2018 season. Florida Memorial also halted its two-game skid and remained unbeaten at home this season with the victory.

How It Happened
  • Florida Memorial scored the first five points of the overtime period – a mid-range jumper followed by a three-pointer by King, putting the Lions up 65-60.
  • After a Keiser made a free throw and got a layup to cut FMU's advantage to two, Benton knocked down a corner three-pointer to put Florida Memorial back up five (68-63) with 2:16 left in the game.
  • King sank a floater in the lane over a Keiser defender to give FMU a seven-point lead and Benton drained a pair of free throws to give the Lions their largest lead – a 72-63 advantage with 55 seconds left.
  • KU made a layup and a three to pull within four (72-68) again, but Cheikh Kebe and Aubrey Washington both knocked down pairs of free throws to extend the Lions lead again and seal the game.
  • The game went into overtime tied at 60 after both teams missed shots on their final possessions of regulation.
  • KU's Antwan Claxton scored on a put-back layup and both teams went scoreless over the final minute of the second half.
  • Florida Memorial trailed for much of regulation, only leading at six different times through the first and second halves.
  • Keiser led by as many as seven during the second half.
  • The Seahawks once held a 12-point lead in the first half (33-21).
  • Florida Memorial closed the first half on a 10-1 run to trail just 34-31 at halftime.
