FMU WBB Falls To NCAA D-II Barry University Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University shot just 37 percent from the field and committed 26 turnovers, a poor elixir, as it fell 96-65 to visiting NCAA Division-II Barry University (Fla.) in a non-counting exhibition Tuesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

How It Happened
  • Following a solid start – where Florida Memorial stood toe-to-toe with BU through the first quarter – the Lions saw Barry methodically pull away from them through second and third quarters before it threw the proverbial knockout punch in the fourth quarter, where the Buccaneers outscored FMU 27-10.
  • Florida Memorial did cut Barry's advantage to 12 points in the opening seconds of the fourth, thanks to a Chantel Barnett layup, but the Buccaneers responded by going on a 16-4 run over the next three minutes.

  • The Lions looked a bit out of sorts offensively, unable to use their defense to generate the frenetic pace that they typically thrive in – recording just 9 fast-break points.

  • FMU did not record any points after the 5:27 mark of the fourth quarter – with its final points being a pair of made free throws by Monique Esbrand.

Inside The Box Score
  • Barnett and Keaynna Tolbert each tied for the team-high with 16 points each.

  • Tolbert added 4 rebounds while Barnett finished with 3 rebounds.

  • Esbrand led the team in rebounding with 7 boards while also contributing 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

  • Natalia Leguizamon had a rough night shooting the ball, going 1-for-6 from the field (0-for-3 from three-point range), and finished with 4 points.

  • Five different Barry University players scored in double figures Tuesday, led by Chiara Fusari's 22 points.

  • Florida Memorial lost the rebounding battle 33-44.

Analysis & Notes

  • Tolbert received a technical foul midway through the third quarter.

  • Florida Memorial lost its fourth game to a NCAA opponent; however, all four games were non-counting exhibitions.
