FMU WBB Looks Rusty, Falls To Webber International Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Having had three consecutive games wiped out due to health and safety protocols, Florida Memorial University looked like every bit of a team that hadn't played an actual game in nearly a month as a poor shooting night haunted the Lions as they fell to visiting Webber International University 78-64 Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

How It Happened
  • FMU shot below 35 percent in each of the first three quarters and made just two three-pointers on the night.
  • The Lions saw a 12-point third-quarter deficit balloon to as much as 22 (77-55) with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
  • Florida Memorial reserve guard Quameerah Peterson-Gray accounted for seven points of a 9-1 spurt that the Lions used to shave eight points off its deficit and create the final 78-64 margin.
  • After trailing 37-26 at halftime, FMU would score the first two buckets of the second half to cut its deficit to seven (37-30), but that would be the closest the Lions would get.
  • FMU fell into an early hole, missing eight of its first nine shots in the first quarter while Webber International built a six-point lead.
  • The Warriors would end up opening a 20-7 advantage on the Lions by the end of the first quarter and put Florida Memorial in an 18-point hole early in the second quarter.

Inside The Box Score
  • Florida Memorial shot 29.4 percent (20-for-68) from the field as a team Thursday.
  • Lions senior guard Aliyah-Deen Ahmad led all scorers with 22 points. Ahmad was the only FMU starter to finish with a shooting field goal percentage over 50 percent (8-of-14).
  • Monique Esbrand added 15 points for Florida Memorial.
  • FMU shot 2-of-17 from three-point range as a team while Webber International's Eletra Graham was 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • The Lions were out-rebounded 56-43, including allowing 16 offensive rebounds.
  • Florida Memorial senior guard Keaynna Tolbert finished 0-for-10 from the field and recorded just 2 points before fouling out in 26 minutes. Tolbert did finish with a team-high 9 rebounds.
  • Webber International had three players finish with at least 14 points, led by Jaida Burgess' 16 points and 7 assists off the bench.

Analysis & Notes
  • The Lions' 11.8 percent shooting clip from three-point range was its worst of the season.
  • Junior guard Jamari Tillman returned to FMU's lineup after missing most of the 2020-21 and the first half of this season with a lower extremity injury. She finished scoreless with 2 steals in 15 minutes of action.
  • Florida Memorial was still without centers Da'Marreya Johnson, who has been out since November.
  • FMU sustained its first conference loss of the season, falling to 5-1 against Sun Conference opponents and 8-5 overall.
  • Webber International improves to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in conference.
