Benton Shines, Florida Memorial MBB Outlasts Thomas University Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior guard Corey Benton recorded the first double-double of his career as a Lion, recording a game-high 21 points and 13 assists to power Florida Memorial University to a 78-70 win over Thomas University (Ga.) Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
How It Happened
  • After leading by as many as 25 (60-35) midway through the second half, FMU saw its lead dwindle down to 74-69 with 0:41 left in the game.
  • FMU was able to keep the Night Hawks at bay after Carington Campbell and Benton each knocked a pair of free throws.
  • Thomas University's rally fell short as it only scored one point over the final 41 seconds.
  • The Lions opened the second half on a 17-3 run that was capped by an Eric Hester jumper.
  • Benton navigated through Night Hawks defenders and connected with Cheikh Kebe and Brent Holcombe on multiple alley-oops that the big men threw down – exciting the crowd and building the Lions' momentum.
  • Florida Memorial held a 37-29 lead at halftime after Hester knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer.
