Shorthanded Lions Fall To Coastal Georgia In Overtime Thursday

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team could've wallowed in the fact that it was missing its leading scorer, instead it got season-best performances from Heather Durand and Cheyanne Whitfield while battling College of Coastal Georgia to what ultimately was a bitter end as it fell to the host Mariners 75-73 in overtime Thursday night.

Durand led all scorers with her season-best 29 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lions, who rallied from a 6-point deficit with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter to force the overtime period.

FMU trailed 66-64 with a single second on the clock in the fourth quarter, inbounding the ball from underneath its own basket. Cheyanne Whitfield slipped past her defender, getting inside position in the paint and banked in a game-tying layup as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation.

The game remained close through the opening minutes of overtime – with two lead changes and a tie in the first two minutes. FMU, which will return home since its February 13 scheduled game at Thomas University was postponed for health and safety reasons, took a 71-70 lead at the 3:28 mark on a Whitfield three-pointer and seemed ready to seize control of the game.

Coastal Georgia would score the next two baskets, taking a 74-71 lead with 1:54 left in the game. Chantel Barnett brought the Lions to within one on the ensuing trip down court with a forceful drive to the basket.

Poor free throw shooting down the stretch by the Mariners left the door open for the Lions, as FMU got the ball with 42 seconds left trailing 75-73 after Coastal Georgia split free throws. FMU couldn't take advantage of the Mariners' deficiencies at the free throw line, though. Durand missed a layup, Coastal Georgia then missed two free throws – leaving the score 75-73 – and Whitfield missed a driving layup as time ran out and allowed the Mariners to escape with the two-point win.

The Lady Lions (9-10, 9-9 The Sun Conference) played without junior guard Keaynna Tolbert for the second straight game Thursday. Tolbert not only leads FMU in scoring this season, she's also the leading scorer in the Sun Conference with 23.5 points per game but has been sidelined with an upper extremity injury.

FMU head coach Gregory Stanback was also still without Jamari Tillman (lower extremity), the team's third-leading scorer, and Destiny Marin (upper extremity), who's No. 2 on the team in three-point shooting percentage. Freshman guard Micah Cooper did return to the lineup Thursday, after missing time with a lower extremity injury, but was limited and only played three minutes.

Barnett secured her first double-double of her collegiate career, finishing with 18 points and 10 boards while playing all 45 minutes Thursday. Whitfield also had her first double-double, totaling 11 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Unique Tate also finished with 11 points for Florida Memorial.
