Lions Split Friday Doubleheader With USC-Beaufort

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – It was a tale of two games for Florida Memorial University's baseball team Friday, as it rode a strong pitching performance from ace Johnaikel Acosta to pick up a 4-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader against University of South Carolina-Beaufort but struggled offensively and defensively in the day's second game – falling 10-0.

The Lions will host the Sand Sharks in the third game of the Sun Conference weekend series Saturday at 12 p.m. back at FMU's Harry T. Moore Field.

Acosta set the tone for the opener in the first inning, striking out two of the first three USC-Beaufort batters he faced. The Oranjestad, Aruba native kept the Sand Sharks' bats in check throughout – only surrendering a run in the top of the second inning on a fielder's choice – as he ended up pitching a complete game with five hits allowed and 10 strikeouts.

The Florida Memorial (3-2, 1-1 The Sun Conference) batters gave Acosta a lead to protect in the bottom of the third inning. After the Lions tied the game at one on an RBI double by Josue Sanchez, first baseman Jacquel Perry got ahold of hanging pitch and sent the ball soaring over the left field fence for a 2-run shot in the bottom of the third.

FMU held onto that 3-1 lead – thanks to Acosta's strong pitching – until the bottom of the seventh, when it tacked on an insurance run on a Yunior Sanchez sacrifice fly that brought Jose Santana across home plate.

Acosta held USC-Beaufort scoreless for another two innings and punctuated his performance with a strikeout for the final out in the top of the ninth.

Axel Gomez had a solid day at the plate during game one, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Perry was 2-for-4 and Sanchez went 1-for-2 with two walks drawn.

The second game wasn't nearly as auspicious for the Lions.

USC-Beaufort (5-4, 1-1) jumped out early – producing a run in the top of the first inning – and built off that momentum, scoring runs in each of the first four innings.

Florida Memorial's bats were silent in the second game as head coach Florentino Burgos even made multiple substitutions looking to potentially spark some offense.

The Lions' pitching also struggled. Starter Rafael Fernandez gave up four runs through the top of the fourth inning and his reliever, Julian Delgado, got just one inning worth of work as he gave up another four runs in the fourth.

Burgos ultimately used four different pitchers as USC-Beaufort racked up 14 hits compared to just three hits – and three errors – for the Lions. Rohandry Javier, Josue Sanchez, and Jalen Young were the only FMU players to record hits in the second game.
