FMU Splits Doubleheader With Ave Maria Saturday, Takes Weekend Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University put together another strong offensive performance in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader – clinching the weekend series win – and elected to play many of its reserves in the second game of the day, splitting victories with visiting Ave Maria University.

The Lions recorded 13 hits en route to an 8-3 win in Saturday's first game and dropped the second game 4-1 in seven innings – as the game was called early due to insufficient light.

FMU made easy work of the Gyrenes Friday – earning an 11-3 win – and kept that momentum going in Saturday's first game back on Harry T. Moore field.

FMU (5-4, 3-3 The Sun Conference) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning – capitalizing on an early error and using some aggressive baserunning to manufacture the early lead. That early advantage held through the top of the fourth inning – when Ave Maria was able to plate two runs largely thanks to a hit-by-pitch and walk – but the Lions extended their lead again in the bottom of the inning when Nathan Harris Jr. brought home two with RBI double to deep center.

Florida Memorial, which will host Florida National University for a doubleheader this coming Tuesday (Feb. 23), pushed its lead out to 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth when it followed a Luis Rivera walk with a hit, a sacrifice bunt by Josue Sanchez, and back-to-back hits by Manuel Mollinedo and Julio Creazzola.

Ave Maria tacked on an inconsequential run in the top of the seventh before relief pitcher Rafael Fernandez shut the door on the Gyrenes.

Creazzola found his groove at the plate in the first game, going 3-of-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to go along with 2 stolen bases. Jose Santana also had 3 hits in the first game Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and a stolen base.

With the series victory in hand, FMU head coach Florentino Burgos elected to play many of his reserves and younger players in the second game Saturday.

Ave Maria took advantage of the mishmash lineup, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

The Lions' bats went cold, as the actual temperatures dipped a bit by South Florida standards, and they didn't record a hit until the bottom of the seventh. Luis Rivera and Zachary Urso each got hits in what was the final inning and Santana scored the team's lone run in the second game.
