FMU Overtakes Florida National Late, Earns 9-6 Win Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the eighth, Florida Memorial University's showed it can manufacture runs with aggressive and opportunistic base running as it plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase the slim deficit and ultimately earn a 9-6 win over visiting Florida National University Tuesday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

Trailing 6-5, the Lions eighth inning rally began with a Jalen Young single, Young then stole second; Luis Rivera got a single through the right side – moving Young over to third – then Jose Santana gave Florida Memorial a 7-6 lead with double to center field. Santana moved over to third on a balk called on the Florida National pitcher and came home on a Josue Sanchez single – giving the Lions an 8-6 lead.

FMU (6-4) tacked on one more insurance run after the FNU pitcher walked in a run.

That 9-6 lead held through the top of the ninth as Lions reliever Rafael Fernandez was able to get the final three outs.

Taking Tuesday's single non-conference matchup against the Conquistadors extends Florida Memorial's win streak over FNU to three straight games and pushes the Lions' all-time record against Florida National to 7-2. The victory also gives FMU some positive vibes and momentum to carry into their upcoming stretch of road games.

The Lions will take their first conference road trip of the season this coming weekend, riding up to West Palm Beach, Florida to face Keiser University in a three-game set. Florida Memorial also has a non-conference road trip to Vorhees College (S.C.) the following weekend (March 5-6) for another three-game series.

The Lions matched their season-high for hits in a game with 14 hits Tuesday. Santana, Sanchez, Rivera, and Ulises Rodriguez all recorded 2 hits. Santana led FMU with 2 RBI; Julio Creazzola notched a triple; and the Florida Memorial totaled 9 stolen bases.

Florida Memorial head coach Florentino Burgos ended up using five pitchers against the Conquistadors. Freshman right-hander Carson Sorrell made his season debut for the Lions; he battled through 5 full innings on the mound, striking out seven and while surrendering five earned runs.

Ramon Garcia and Dawrin Ruiz each pitched one full inning in relief. Krystian Negron also made his season debut on the mound, after missing the first couple of weeks of the season with an injury, facing four batters in the eighth inning and producing a strikeout, a groundout, and a fly out, and earning the win.
