FMU Drops Series Opener At No. 15 Keiser Friday

Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida Memorial University fell into an early hole – a detrimental factor when trying to upset a nationally ranked opponent – and couldn't build any momentum to rally back as it fell 12-2 to No. 15 Keiser University Friday on KU's Alumni Field.

The Lions, who had just five hits Friday, will have two more chances to possibly upend the Seahawks – and potentially take the conference weekend series – as the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Florida Memorial fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning and only saw the deficit grow through the first three innings. Keiser took a 7-0 lead by the end of the third inning, knocking around FMU starting pitcher Juan Hernandez.

Hernandez did battle while he was on the mound, though. The sophomore righty threw 6 full innings, striking out 7 while also producing 7 fly outs and 6 ground outs – it was the 11 hits and 8 earned runs that he yielded that earned him the loss on the day.

Florida Memorial (6-5, 3-4 The Sun Conference) got on the board in the fourth inning when Jalen Young came home on an error by the Seahawks' third baseman and got another run in the top of the fifth on a Manuel Mollinedo solo home run – cutting its deficit to 7-2.

Keiser University (14-4. 3-4) tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and another one in the bottom of the sixth, then plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning – turning on the 10-run rule and ending the game.

Mollinedo was a team-best 2-for-3 on the day, with a run scored to go along with his first home run of the season. Axel Gomez, Julio Creazzola, and Jose Santana were the other Lions batters to register hits Friday while six different Seahawks had two hits or more.
