Barnett Has Career Night, Lady Lions Cruise Past Ave Maria

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Led by freshman Chantel Barnett's career-high 24 points, Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a solid 67-54 victory over visiting Ave Maria University Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

Barnett, a Cleveland, Ohio native, set multiple career highs Thursday – field goals made (10), field goals attempted (18), and minutes played (39) – as she poured in the game's highest point total and recorded a game-high 5 steals.

The only other FMU player to score in double figures Thursday was junior Keaynna Tolbert. Tolbert, the Sun Conference's leading scorer and three-time conference Player of the Week, took on more of a facilitating role – dishing out a game-high 6 assists and grabbing 7 rebounds while scoring 18 points.

While a win is a win, the Lions – who will travel to face Warner University this coming Saturday (Feb. 6) – had to work a bit harder to arrive in the winner's circle Thursday than it did the last time they faced Ave Maria.

Just 11 days ago, Florida Memorial completely dismantled the Gyrenes in a 100-42 rout. Ave Maria looked like a much different team Thursday. The Gyrenes jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and held a lead over the Lions at the end of the first quarter.

Florida Memorial took control of the game in the second quarter, taking a 31-28 lead into halftime and stretching that lead out to as many as 20 midway through the fourth quarter.

FMU's Heather Durand was a rebound and a point shy of finishing with a double-double, as she had 9 and 9 in 35 minutes of action. Senior Anjelie Tirone had 8 points and a game-high 3 blocks while Cheyanne Whitfield and Janae Markes – who returned to the Lions' lineup after missing multiple games with an injury – each finished with 3 points. Florida Memorial, which entered Thursday's game having already clinched a spot in the Sun Conference postseason tournament for the 15th straight season, was still shorthanded as guards Micah Cooper (lower extremity), Jamari Tillman (lower extremity), and Destiny Marin (upper extremity) all remain out with injuries.

Ave Maria (6-13, 3-10) was led Monica Behrend's 14 points, but the Lions forced the Gyrenes into 19 turnovers and held them to just 36 percent shooting from the field.
