Shorthanded Lady Lions Run Past Royals Saturday

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Playing without its leading scorer Keaynna Tolbert for the first time this season, Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team had multiple players step up to fill the void as it cruised to a 62-47 victory over host Warner University Saturday afternoon in WU's Turner Athletic Center.

Freshman guard Chantel Barnett led all scorers with 21 points while also grabbing 7 rebounds and played all 40 minutes for the Lions, who had just seven players available Saturday.

Tolbert, the leading scorer in the Sun Conference and top five scorer in the nation, missed Saturday's game with an upper extremity injury – joining Jamari Tillman (lower extremity), Destiny Marin (upper extremity), and Micah Cooper (lower extremity) on the injury report.

The Lions, who held a 36-19 halftime lead over Warner University, should benefit from the extra bit of rest they will receive since they won't return to the hardwood until February 11th when it travels to face College of Coastal Georgia.

FMU head coach Gregory Stanback hopes the extra days of rest could improve the status of his injured players as the team heads sprints to the end of the regular season.

While Barnett picked up a lion's share of the scoring load in Tolbert's absence, Heather Durand did her part by added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Anjelie Tirone finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds, freshman Cheyanne Whitfield contributed 10 points and 6 boards off the bench, and freshman Giselle Garcia grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and chipped in 5 points.

Florida Memorial (9-9, 9-8 The Sun Conference). which completed the regular season sweep over the Royals with the victory Saturday, extended its 17-point halftime lead to 26 not even three minutes into the third quarter after a Tirone layup.

That 26-point deficit was insurmountable for the Royals, who have now lost seven straight games. Florida Memorial held Warner to just 28 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent three-point range while also forcing the Royals into 14 turnovers – 11 coming on steals. FMU also won the rebound battle 43-31.
