Lions Battle No. 4 Bobcats, Falter In Late Innings Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's baseball team had a strong early showing in its first big road test of the season – playing to a 3-3 tie with No. 4 St. Thomas University through the top of the sixth inning – but couldn't overcome its nationally-ranked rival as it fell 13-3 Tuesday night at Paul D. Mainieri Field.

After the Lions tied the game at 3 in the top of the sixth on an Axel Gomez RBI double that brought home Charles Bryant Jr., St. Thomas responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-3 lead. FMU's couldn't produce any offense in the top of the seventh while the Bobcats tacked on another 4 runs.

Florida Memorial, which will host University of South Carolina-Beaufort for a three-game home weekend series this coming Friday, went scoreless again in the top of the eighth and St. Thomas plated another run in the bottom of the inning – activating the 10-run rule to end the game in the eighth and giving the Bobcats the first win in this season's Battle of Miami Gardens.

The Lions did rack up 9 hits Tuesday. Bryant and Gomez both went 2-for-3 at the plate and each had an RBI while Rohandry Javier was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

While the late innings were unkind to FMU and led to the lopsided final margin, the box score tells a tale of a lot of self-inflicted damaged. The Lions committed four errors – compared to none for St. Thomas – and their batters left nine runners on base throughout.

Juan Hernandez got the start but only threw two innings as Burgos ended up using five different pitchers Tuesday night. Julian Delgado tossed two innings and had the best outing – forcing three fly outs and two ground outs in the five batters he faced – while Bryant (0-1) took the loss in his one-third inning worth of work.

St. Thomas University totaled 12 hits against the Lions, including a solo home run by Andrew Fernandez in the bottom of the second inning.
