FMU Drops Two At Thomas University Friday

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – While "momentum" is a very intangible thing it produces very tangible effects, evident by FMU's ninth-inning breakdown in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against host Thomas University – which ended in a 6-5 loss – that drained any momentum the Lions had fed it to the Night Hawks, who then went on to hand Florida Memorial University a 9-3 in the second game.

The Lions' two losses Friday also gave the overall weekend series win to Thomas University. The teams will meet for a single game Saturday afternoon back at Varndoe Stadium.

Florida Memorial took a fairly comfortable 5-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning after it couldn't tack on any additional runs in the top of the ninth. Lions starting pitcher Rafael Fernandez, who had mostly held the Night Hawks batters in check throughout the day, allowed a single then got the next batter to fly out the center.

Thomas got another single, then blew open the door with a three-run home run – cutting FMU's lead to 5-4. Lions head coach Florentino Burgos then gave the ball to freshman righty Dawrin Ruiz, unfortunately, Ruiz allowed a home run to the first batter he faced – tying the game – then Night Hawks got a walk-off single from to take a 6-5 win.

The late breakdown sullied what was otherwise a solid offensive day for Florida Memorial (10-11, 3-8 The Sun Conference). Catcher Josue Sanchez had one of his best days at the plate this season in the first game Friday – going 2-for-4 with a home run that gave the Lions a 4-1 lead in the top of the 6th inning, a double, and 2 RBI. Yunior Sanchez also went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Rohandry Javier went 1-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.

FMU DROPS GAME TWO FRIDAY
Thomas University (12-16, 2-6) used the momentum it got from its ninth inning rally to hand FMU a 9-3 loss in the second game Friday.

Florida Memorial, which has now lost three consecutive, did take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning and led 2-1 going into the fourth after Luis Rivera sent a hanging pitch soaring over the left-center fence for a solo home run.

The Night Hawks then produced four runs in back-to-back innings – taking a 9-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.

It looked as though the Lions tried to get a rally going in the top of the seventh when they got a hit from Javier, a groundout that moved Javier over to second, a single from Axel Gomez, and a single from Yunior Sanchez – which scored Javier – but that one run would be all that they would produce after Rivera hit into a double play to end the inning.

Javier, Rivera, and Yunior Sanchez each had 2 hits in the second game.

The Lions used three pitchers in the second game – starter Krystian Negron and relievers Julio Creazzola and Ramon Garcia – but none of them ever got comfortable on the mound, evident by the 9 total walks (3 each) and 3 hit-by-pitches (1 each).
