FMU Falls To Night Hawks Saturday, Gets Swept In Weekend Series

THOMASVILLE, GA. – Florida Memorial University fell into an early hole that it was unable to climb out of, as it fell 11-5 to host Thomas University Saturday in the third game of the conference weekend series between the teams.

The Lions (10-12, 3-9 The Sun Conference) also dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader against the Night Hawks. With Saturday's result, FMU has dropped seven consecutive conference games.

Like has more often than not this season, Florida Memorial put a run on the board in the first inning of the game. The Lions capitalized on some early erratic throws by Thomas' starting pitcher as Jalen Young took first base after getting hit by a pitch then advanced to second base on a pass ball. Young moved over to third on a Rohandry Javier single then crossed home plate on a Yunior Sanchez groundout.

The 1-run lead was erased at the bottom of the first as the Night Hawks 13-16, 3-6) manufactured 6 runs in their first at bats of the game. Thomas University's batters were able to get to Florida Memorial starter Johnaikel Acosta, who was making his return to the Lions' lineup after missing nearly a month with an upper extremity injury.

Acosta's first action back was rough. He faced 10 batters in the first inning – walking three, hitting two others with pitches, and yielding 5 earned runs – before head coach Florentino Burgos brought in Dawrin Ruiz in relief. Ruiz went 5 and 1/3 innings and Carson Sorrell also saw action on the mound, pitching the final two innings Saturday.

Florida Memorial catcher Josue Sanchez still had a hot bat. After he notched multiple hits in both of Friday's game – including a home run in one of those games – Sanchez went 3-for-4 Saturday with a triple, 3 RBI, and a run scored. The Lions had a decent day at the plate overall, the team recorded more hits (13) than Thomas University (9) did as Javier went 3-for-5 and had a stolen base; Jacquel Perry was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored; and Zachary Urso finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Those hits, however, just couldn't translate into enough runs.

FMU will return home and have a single day to rest and regroup before taking on No. 8 Keiser University Tuesday in a mid-week non-conference single game at Harry T. Moore Field.
