Lions Have Better Showing, Still Drop Two At Panther Beach Tourney

MIAMI – Morale or moral victories typically don't rank too high up on the list of achievements for programs with high expectations like Florida Memorial University's beach volleyball program, but a feat like earning a single-game victory against a NCAA Division-I opponent was a bright spot on a day that saw the Lady Lions drop both of their matches during the second day of the Panther Beach Tournament at Florida International University's Beach Courts.

FMU (2-6) fell to University of North Florida and No. 13 (NCAA national ranking) FIU 0-5 in both of its matches Saturday – as it did Friday – but battled the larger programs even harder.

Sammyra Albarran and Alanis Santana earned the team's single-game victory in the No. 5 flight against the Ospreys. After being edged out in the first game 19-21, Santana and Albarran bounced back and took the second set 21-19 against North Florida's Chantel McMillian and Carolyn Cain. Albarran and Santana pushed Cain and McMillian again in the third set but fell 13-15.

Florida Memorial's No. 1 flight pair Olivia Dodd and Azmabeth Infante recorded double-digit points in both of their sets against the UNF No. 1 pair while Santana and Albarran were the only duo to do the same in the match against Florida International – scoring 19 and 16 points in their two games against FIU's No. 5 pair.

The Lady Lions will be back on their home sand this coming week when they take on Sun Conference foe Warner University on Wednesday, March 24 for a makeup match of the March 13th postponement.
