FMU Wallops Warner University, Wins 4-1 Wednesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University head volleyball coach Marrita Crockett-Moulton challenged her team ahead of their match Wednesday, saying "losing was not an option".

So, the Lady Lions did the "only thing they could", they won, and won convincingly – knocking off visiting Warner University 4-1 Wednesday morning on the FMU Beach Courts.

FMU hosted the Royals Wednesday in what was a makeup of the March 13th game, which was supposed to be hosted by Warner, that was postponed. Warner University also played St. Thomas University Wednesday on the FMU Beach Courts. The Lions did not play St. Thomas Wednesday.

Florida Memorial's win Wednesday came with a couple extra incentives. It snapped a six-game losing streak, which included four losses to NCAA Division-I opponents (University of North Florida and No. 13 Florida International University), and it helped the Lions' seeding in the upcoming Sun Conference tournament – likely solidifying the three-seed for FMU.

Wednesday also saw a couple of the Lions' pairs continue their strong play in the sand. Rafaela Nogueira and Dana Noel moved up to the No. 4 flight and remained undefeated against Sun Conference opponents – taking their match 21-13, 21-18.

The duo of Sammyra Albarran and Alanis Santana used the bit of momentum it built this past weekend – being the only and first FMU beach volleyball pair to win a game against a Division-I opponent – to give them a huge confidence boost, evident by their 21-13, 21-16 win at the No. 5 flight.

Crockett-Moulton moved Biancaliz Cruz and Keisha Santana into the No. 1 flight against the Royals and it paid dividends, as they battled back from dropping the first set to take a 12-21, 21-18, 15-12 win. The duo of Azmabeth Infante and Olivia Dodd, who had been playing at the No. 1 flight the past couple of weeks, played at No. 2 and rallied back from a first-set loss to take their match 17-21, 21-7, 17-15.

Florida Memorial, which will be participating in the FIU Surf 'N' Turf Invitational this Friday (March 26) before heading to Babson Park, Florida to play in the Sun Conference Championship Tournament, missed out on the sweep as Warner University's No. 3 pair was able to edge out Adriana Soto and Agustina Busque 21-18, 16-21, 13-15. It was, however, Busque's first match back in the sand after missing the past week due to health and safety protocols.
