FMU Falls To No. 25 Webber International Friday

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Florida Memorial University fell into an early hole and tried to rally back in the ninth inning but couldn't quite make up all the ground as it fell 8-3 to host No. 25 Webber International University Friday in the opening game of a three-game weekend series.

The Lions saw their deficit grow from 0-2 at the end of the first inning to an 8-0 hole heading into the top of the ninth inning. FMU did try to put on its rally cap, as Carson Sorrell began the ninth with a double to right field. After an Ulises Rodriguez fly out, Nathan Harris Jr. brought Sorrell home with a RBI single through the left gap.

Luis Rivera hit a dinger to center for a single – moving Harris over to third – then Jose Santana reached on an error, which allowed Harris to score and Rivera to move over to second. Catcher Josue Sanchez then hit a RBI single up the middle, bringing in Rivera and cutting the Lions' deficit to 8-3 with just one out and two on.

That would be the end of the run, unfortunately, as Florida Memorial's next two batters struck out swinging and popped up respectively – ending the game with the final 8-3 margin and giving the Lions their seventh consecutive loss.

Florida Memorial (10-14, 3-10 The Sun Conference), will have two more chances to right the ship and snap the losing streak Saturday when it returns to Heart of Florida Field for a doubleheader, beginning at 12 noon.

The Webber International (20-14) starting pitcher threw a complete game and mostly stymied the FMU bats – yielding just three earned runs, zero walks and 10 strikeouts.

Harris had the best day at the plate for Florida Memorial. He went 2-for-4 – and was the only Lion with more than one hit Friday – with a RBI and a run scored. Sorrell's lone hit was a double; Sanchez was 1-for-4 with a RBI; Rivera was 1-for-4 as was Rodriguez.

FMU head coach Florentino Burgos gave the ball to Rafael Fernandez at the start of the game. The senior right-hander battled through seven full innings, striking out 6 and walking just 3 but did give up all 8 of the Warriors' runs as earned runs.

Ramon Garcia did throw one inning in relief Friday, striking out 2 and forcing a fly out in the four batters he faced.
