Lions Split Saturday’s Doubleheader With No. 25 Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Sometimes the smallest spark can ignite the biggest flames.

Though it dropped the overall series, Florida Memorial University was able to come away with a split in Saturday's doubleheader against host No. 25 Webber International University – taking the second game 7-6 – snapping the team's seven-game losing streak.

The Lions dropped the first game Saturday 7-3, which clinched the weekend series win for Webber, but FMU showed a solid level of resolve and resiliency to bounce back, avoid the sweep, and pick up what it hopes is a springboard win.

Saturday's second game saw Florida Memorial (11-15, 4-11 The Sun Conference) take an early lead and carry a 7-3 advantage into the bottom of the ninth inning – after plating two runs in the top of the inning. Webber International made an attempt at a rally in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the Lions' lead to 7-6 with two outs and the bases loaded.

FMU was able to squeeze out the last out on a fielder's choice – shutting the door on the Warriors and putting the punctuation on the one-run win.

Florida Memorial took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning thanks in large part to a Jacquel Perry home run. Perry got his bat on a hanging pitch and sent the ball sailing over the right field fence for a 2-run shot. Manuel Mollinedo hit an RBI triple later in the inning to give the Lions the three-run advantage.

Webber International manufactured runs in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth to tie the game at 3, but it was Perry that put the Lions ahead again in the top of the seventh with a 2-RBI single that brought home Samuel Urso and Julio Creazzola.

Perry ended up 2-for-5 at the plate with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Axel Gomez also went 2-for-5 and had a run scored. Mollinedo led with a team-high 3 hits (3-for-5) in the second game Saturday while Urso and Luis Rivera each recorded a hit.

Senior pitcher Krystian Negron picked up the win on the mound for FMU, which will host No. 12 St. Thomas University for a three-game weekend series this coming Friday and Saturday (April 2-3), throwing 8 and a third innings while forcing 16 flyouts and 5 groundouts and striking out three Warriors batters.

WARRIORS TOP LIONS IN FIRST GAME SATURDAY
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Florida Memorial couldn't keep that offensive pace going while Webber International found its groove in the middle innings at knocked off the Lions 7-3 in Saturday's first game at Heart of Florida Stadium.

Rohandry Javier led Florida Memorial, which racked up 9 hits in the opening game of the doubleheader, by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

No other Lion head more than a single hit and FMU didn't register any extra-base hits.
