Lady Lions To Face Ave Maria In TSC Tournament Semifinals

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University will begin its journey to a Sun Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament title Saturday afternoon when it takes on Ave Maria University in the semifinal round at Webber International University's Beach Volleyball Courts.

This season marks the first that the Sun Conference will host and crown a beach volleyball tournament champion. Webber International, the No. 1 seeded team thanks to it having the top record against conference opponents, will host the one-day, four-team tourney.

Webber International will take on Warner University in the other semifinal (slated to begin at 11 a.m.) with the two winning teams playing for the tournament championship at 3 p.m.

FMU (3-8) rolls into conference tournament on a bit of a sour note after it took a pair of losses to NCAA Division-I opponents – Florida Gulf Coast University and University of Tampa – at the Florida International University Surf 'N' Turf Invitational.

Dropping games to the "bigger programs", however, is of little to no consequence for the Lions and head coach Marrita Crockett-Moulton. Crockett-Moulton knows that having her team duel with Division-I opponents will sharpen her squad and give them confidence from the fact that they've shared the court with elite competition.

The Lady Lions will also be out for a bit of revenge when they take on the Gyrenes Saturday. Ave Maria handed Florida Memorial a 4-1 loss back on March 17th and completely knocked the Lions out of contention for hosting the conference tournament.

It'll be interesting to see how Crockett-Moulton seeds her pairs in the flights Saturday. Freshmen Olivia Dodd and Azmabeth Infante, who received the conference Champion of Character Award for the beach volleyball season Friday, have mostly played in the No. 1 flight this season but played at the No. 2 flight against Warner University this past Wednesday.

Agustina Busque and Adriana Soto, one of the Sun Conference's preseason pairs to watch, will need to play up to their potential this weekend while the new pair of Dana Noel and Rafaela Nogueira will need to continue their undefeated streak against Sun Conference opponents.
