FMU Topples No. 14 St. Thomas University Friday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – It was Good Friday and Florida Memorial University's baseball team had a good Friday.

The Lions received a gem of pitching performance from senior Rafael Fernandez as he struck out a season-high 12 batters and held visiting No. 14 St. Thomas University to just 5 hits while Florida Memorial manufactured 5 early runs to capture a 5-2 weekend series-opening victory Friday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

Fernandez went into the top of the ninth inning – when the Bobcats were finally able to get on the board with a pair of runs – before Carson Sorrell moved over from third base to the mound and got the final two outs and cement what was FMU head coach Florentino Burgos' first win over St. Thomas in his tenure leading the Lions.

Florida Memorial (12-15, 5-11 The Sun Conference), which will return to its home diamond Saturday at 12 noon for a doubleheader against the Bobcats, took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when the middle of the batting order was able to get a rally going.

No. 4 hitter Yunior Sanchez started it with a single through the right side; Jacquel Perry took a pitch in the back; then Jalen Young was able to get on first on a fielder's choice – moving Perry over to second while Sanchez was thrown out at third.

After a fly out, Zachary Urso hit a 2-out single up the middle to load the bases. Manuel Mollinedo then came up and brought two home with a single to left and Sorrell brought Urso home with dinger through the right side – giving FMU a 3-0 lead.

Fernandez quickly shut down the STU (22-14, 8-5) batters in the top of the third – striking out two and forcing a groundout – while the Lions tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to Young, who brought Axel Gomez home with an RBI double then scored himself as he stole third and was able to come home after a throwing error by the Bobcats catcher.

Young, who had family members attending Friday's game, led the way at the plate – going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, the double, and the RBI. Mollinedo went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI; Perry was 1-for-3 with a run scored; and Sorrell was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
