Lions Drop Two Saturday, Drop Weekend Series To No. 14 Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University was unable to carry the momentum it had coming off its 3-run win over its neighborhood and conference rival No. 14 St. Thomas University Friday into Saturday's doubleheader as the Lions dropped both games and – ultimately – the weekend series to the visiting Bobcats Saturday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

FMU, which topped St. Thomas 5-2 Friday behind Rafael Fernandez's pitching gem, played STU to a 2-2 draw through the regular nine innings and into an extra 10th inning before action at the plate began to pick up for both teams.

After holding St. Thomas scoreless in the top of the 10th, Florida Memorial got a rally going. Manuel Mollinedo started it with a single to left; Carson Sorrell drew a walk; then Luis Rivera drew a walk – loading the bases with two outs. Lions head coach Florentino Burgos then used Yunior Sanchez as a pinch hitter, hoping the seasoned upperclassmen could drive in the potential game-winning run.

Sanchez did indeed make good contact with an inside pitch, sending the ball towards the right gap between first and second as he went racing down the first base line. The St. Thomas second baseman gathered the ball and hurled it to first. The first-base umpire called Sanchez out on the "bang-bang" play, much to the chagrin of Lions coaches, players, and fans - ending the inning.

The Bobcats' bats got hot in the top of the 11th and they produced five runs as relievers Ramon Garcia and Sorrell couldn't put a cap on their momentum.

The Lions (12-17, 5-13 The Sun Conference) couldn't spark any kind of rally in the bottom of the second extra inning and fell 7-2.

Saturday's second game got off to tough start for FMU – falling behind 4-1 by the end of the third inning – and it went off completely off the rails for Lions in the top of the fifth when St. Thomas manufactured 8 runs and took a 12-1 lead.

That double-digit deficit stood pat until Florida Memorial, which will travel to face Ave Maria University for a non-conference single game matchup this coming Tuesday (April 6), plated a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut STU's lead to 12-3.

Though the Lions did enough to deactivate the impending "10-run rule" in the bottom of the seventh, the umpires called the game as visibility became an issue because the sun had set and FMU's Harry T. Moore Field does not have lights.

Saturday's game-one pitching starter, senior Krystian Negron put together a solid performance early. He kept the Bobcats (24-14, 10-5) batters in check – allowing just 1 run in the first inning and another in the seventh while striking out five and giving up just 2 walks. Negron ended up throwing 7 and one-third innings before Garcia came in in relief.

Sophomore outfielder Jalen Young had the most consistent bat for FMU, going 3-for-5 in the first game and 1-for-2 in the second while also stealing a base in both games.

Sanchez and Zachary Urso both went 2-for-4 in the first game while Gabriel Marinez and Axel Gomez both finished 1-for-3 in the second game Saturday.
